    What We Do

Professional decorating that holds its finish for decades, not seasons.

    What it is

Painting and decorating covers all the work that turns a built room into a finished one — filling, sanding, priming, cutting in and applying finish coats to walls, ceilings, woodwork and metalwork, plus wallpapering and specialist finishes. Done properly, 80% of the time is preparation.

    Who it is for

Sudbury, Long Melford, Glemsford and Suffolk/Essex homeowners refreshing tired interiors, painting freshly plastered rooms after building work, decorating exteriors of timber and rendered houses, and wallpapering feature walls and full rooms.

    When you need it

After plastering or building work; when colours are dated or chipped; before selling a property; when the exterior is showing signs of weather damage; or as a planned five-year refresh on woodwork.

    Why professional help matters

A bad paint job is the most visible failure in a renovation. Roller streaks, brush marks, paint on glass and missed cut-ins broadcast 'cheap' from across the room.

The Cost of Getting It Wrong

What happens when decorating is rushed, under-specified or done by the wrong trade.

Painting looks easy on YouTube — until you see the result in side-light a week later.

Risks if ignored or done badly

    • Peeling paint on woodwork within months because old gloss was not sanded back to a key.
    • Patchy walls where filler was not sanded flat or primer was skipped.
    • Paint blooming on freshly plastered walls because mist coats were too thick or skipped.
    • Exterior paint flaking off render in two years because it was applied over damp masonry.
    • Brush and roller marks visible in side-light because cheap trade emulsion was used and not laid off properly.

    Common mistakes we fix

    • Painting over wallpaper instead of stripping back.
    • Using vinyl emulsion in bathrooms and kitchens instead of moisture-resistant paint.
    • Skipping a knotting and primer coat on bare softwood.
    • Buying paint by the brand name without checking the actual product line — trade and retail differ enormously.

    Honest Advice

If a cheaper or simpler option is right for you, we say so. We turn down work we can't do brilliantly.

    The Detail That Matters

How we approach decorating — materials, methods and the work behind the finish.

Decorating is a preparation trade with a finish coat at the end. The hours we put into prep are why our finishes still look right at year ten.

    Materials we use

    • Trade-grade emulsions from Dulux Trade, Crown Trade and Farrow & Ball Estate Eggshell.
    • Water-based satinwood and gloss for woodwork — no yellowing, faster recoating, lower VOC.
    • Proper alkyd undercoats and primers — never one-coat 'all-in-one' shortcuts on detailed woodwork.
    • Caulk and decorator's filler used at every internal angle and crack — no exposed gaps.
    • Specialist exterior masonry paints (Sandtex, Zinsser, Keim) chosen for the substrate.

    Methods we follow

    • Walls washed down and sanded before any paint touches them — never painted over greasy or dusty surfaces.
    • All cracks filled, sanded and spot-primed before the wall is rolled.
    • Mist coat (watered-down emulsion) applied to fresh plaster before the topcoat goes on.
    • Edges cut in by brush, walls rolled and laid off in one direction for even sheen.
    • Woodwork rubbed down between every coat — minimum two coats over primer.

    Variations of decorating we cover

    Interior repainting

Walls, ceilings, woodwork and radiators in single rooms or whole houses.

    Decorating after plastering

Mist coat plus two top coats on freshly plastered walls — the most common reason customers call us.

    Exterior masonry painting

Render, brick and pebbledash painting with proper masonry coatings.

    Exterior woodwork

Soffits, fascias, barge boards, doors and windows in long-life coatings.

    Wallpapering

Single feature walls or whole rooms in standard, woodchip-strip and heavy-duty papers.

    Specialist finishes

Limewash, eggshell, chalk paint, lacquer and metalwork coatings as needed.

    Situations we work in

    • After plastering, building or extension work — the final finish stage.
    • Pre-sale refresh to maximise property value.
    • Whole-house redecoration after buying a new property.
    • Exterior repainting on a 5–8 year cycle for timber, 10–15 for masonry.
    • Period and listed properties using breathable, traditional coatings.

    Residential & commercial

We use lead-paint testing kits on any pre-1960 woodwork before sanding, and follow safe-removal practice if lead is present. For listed and period properties we use breathable mineral and limewash systems only.

    FAQ

Painting & Decorating questions, answered straight.

Don't see your question? Call David direct on 07521 287114.

How much does it cost to paint a room in Suffolk?+

A typical bedroom (walls and ceiling) is £350–£550 fully prepared and painted. Adding woodwork takes it to £550–£800. Whole-house redecorations are usually £4,500–£9,000 depending on size and detail.

How long does decorating a room take?+

A standard bedroom is 2–3 days fully prepared, painted and finished. A living room with detailed woodwork is 3–4 days. Whole houses run 2–4 weeks.

Can you paint freshly plastered walls?+

Yes — freshly plastered walls need a mist coat (watered-down emulsion) first to seal the surface, then two top coats. We always wait until the plaster is fully dry (pale all over) before starting.

    Do you do exterior decorating?+

Yes — masonry, render, soffits, fascias, doors and windows. We sheet the work area, scrape and prime back to sound surface, and use long-life exterior coatings.

    Will you move my furniture?+

Yes — we move furniture to the centre of the room, sheet it down, and protect floors fully. For larger rooms we ask you to remove fragile items and ornaments.

Do you provide and recommend the paint?+

Yes — we supply trade-grade Dulux, Crown or specialist paints as standard, and we work with any colour you've chosen. Farrow & Ball, Little Greene, Edward Bulmer all welcome.

    Can you wallpaper as well?+

Yes — single feature walls and full rooms. Lining paper, standard, embossed and heavy-duty papers all in our regular work.

What guarantee do you offer on decorating?+

12-month workmanship guarantee on all paintwork. Manufacturer guarantees on the coatings themselves are passed straight to you.
