Fencing & Boundary WallsBuilt to Stand Upto Suffolk Weather
Closeboard, panel, post-and-rail and brick boundary walls — installed straight, square and properly concreted so they hold their finish for fifteen years, not five.
Professional fencing that holds its finish for decades, not seasons.
What it is
Fencing covers timber boundary work — closeboard, lap panel, hit-and-miss, post-and-rail, picket and trellis — together with the gravel boards, posts and concreting that hold them up. Boundary walls cover brick, block and stone walls built on proper footings.
Who it is for
Homeowners across Sudbury, Long Melford, Glemsford and Suffolk/Essex replacing storm-damaged fences, marking new boundaries after a build, securing gardens for children and pets, and adding privacy or wind-break to exposed plots.
When you need it
After winter storms, when the existing fence has lost more panels than it has standing; when buying a property with no clear boundary; when starting a garden landscaping project; or when overlooking has become a problem.
Why professional help matters
Cheap fencing falls down. The cost of doing it again — including paying twice for removal and disposal — is more than the cost of doing it correctly the first time.
What happens when fencing is rushed, under-specified or done by the wrong trade.
Fencing is the most over-cut-corner trade in the country. Posts hammered into the ground without concrete, panels cut wonky to fit, and gravel boards skipped 'to save a few quid' all turn into a leaning, broken fence within five years.
Risks if ignored or done badly
- Whole runs blowing flat in the next named storm because posts were not concreted to depth.
- Timber rot at ground contact within 2–3 years because gravel boards were skipped.
- Boundary disputes with neighbours when fence lines drift off the legal boundary.
- Loose or wobbly fence acting as a security weakness for opportunist break-ins.
- Replacement costs doubling because the original installer left rotten posts in the ground.
Common mistakes we fix
- Concreting posts only 300mm deep — the minimum is 600mm and 750mm in exposed plots.
- Skipping gravel boards and putting timber direct to soil.
- Mixing concrete-spur fixings with shallow timber posts on the same run.
- Building brick boundary walls without a proper footing — they crack in the first frost cycle.
A clear, predictable five-step process from first call to sign-off.

Honest Advice
If a cheaper or simpler option is right for you, we say so. We turn down work we can't do brilliantly.
How we approach fencing — materials, methods and the work behind the finish.
A fence done right is a 15-year asset. The difference is in the depth of the post, the choice of timber and the bedding of the gravel board.
Materials we use
- Pressure-treated UC4 softwood posts, 100×100mm or 125×125mm depending on height.
- Concrete or pressure-treated timber gravel boards on every run — never timber direct to ground.
- Closeboard featheredge boards (16×125mm) on arris-rail frames for the strongest panel.
- Pre-made lap, hit-and-miss or decorative panels from FSC-certified UK manufacturers.
- Post-mix concrete or wet mix to depth — never just rammed soil or hardcore.
Methods we follow
- Boundary line agreed with you (and shown to neighbours where needed) before any digging starts.
- Posts dug to 600–750mm depending on height and exposure, concreted full depth.
- Strings and levels used on every run — no eyeballing.
- Closeboard built on site for permanent runs, panel fences for faster installs.
- Brick walls on full concrete footings to depth, with movement joints and capping as needed.
Variations of fencing we cover
Closeboard fencing
The strongest timber fence — featheredge boards on horizontal arris rails, built on site for any length and height.
Lap panel fencing
Pre-made overlap panels in concrete posts and gravel boards — fast install, good value.
Hit-and-miss / slatted fencing
Wind-permeable, modern look — better for exposed plots than solid panels.
Post-and-rail fencing
Traditional rural fencing for paddocks, large gardens and long boundaries.
Picket and trellis
Lower-height decorative fencing for front gardens and screening.
Brick and stone walls
Permanent boundary walls on engineered footings, with proper damp courses and capping.
Situations we work in
- Replacing storm-damaged fences after winter weather.
- New boundary after a building plot has been split.
- Securing dog-friendly and child-safe gardens.
- Wind-break and privacy fencing for exposed plots.
- Heritage and conservation areas requiring traditional timber detail.
Residential & commercial
Heights over 2m at the rear and over 1m next to a highway require planning permission. We check this on every quote and apply if needed.

How much does a new fence cost in Suffolk?+
Closeboard fencing typically runs £85–£120 per linear metre supplied and installed including concrete posts and gravel boards. Lap panel is £65–£90 per metre. Brick walls vary widely — £350–£600 per linear metre is typical.
How long should a fence last?+
A properly built closeboard fence with concreted posts and gravel boards lasts 15–20 years. Lap panels typically 10–15 years. Cheap installs without gravel boards or proper concrete often fail in 3–5 years.
Do I need planning permission for a new fence?+
Permitted Development allows fences up to 2m at the rear and 1m next to a highway. Anything taller, or any fence in a Conservation Area or against a Listed Building, may need permission.
Will you remove and dispose of my old fence?+
Yes — removal, breakdown and tip-fees are included as standard in every quote. We never leave waste behind.
Do you build brick boundary walls?+
Yes — full brick and block walls on engineered footings, with damp courses, movement joints and capping. Walls over 1m next to a highway need Building Regulations approval.
Can you fix a leaning fence rather than replace it?+
Sometimes — if posts are sound but panels are loose, we can re-fix and reinforce. If posts have rotted at ground line (the most common failure point), full replacement is usually the only honest option.
How quickly can you start fencing work?+
Typical lead time is 2–4 weeks in spring and summer, 4–6 weeks in autumn. After major storms, expect longer waits — we triage by safety and damage.
Do you work in the rain or winter?+
Yes — fencing is largely all-weather work. We avoid concreting in hard frost, but otherwise winter installs are perfectly normal.
